SATELLITE GALLERY: NOT PHOTOGRAPHS

Damian Moppett & Andrea Pinheiro

Opening Reception: July 8, 6 to 9 pm

The exhibition features new works by two Vancouver based artists who use photographs as canvases on which new images are built. Moppett utilizes an array of computer generated drawing tools to elaborate and adulterate existing photographs, while Pinheiro physically paints on small photographs, then scans and enlarges the subsequent images to larger size. Both artists’ techniques arise out of histories of collage and montage, however, the photographs in their work hover at an uneasy interstice between matrix and image, and at a point where form and content are peculiarly fluid. The results may be called paintings or photographs. They are both and not.Damian Moppett is a Vancouver based artist. He has exhibited internationally with recent solo shows at Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver in 2010 and the Temple Gallery, Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Yvon Lambert Gallery, both in 2007. His work will be the subject of an upcoming solo exhibition at the Rennie Collection at Wing Sang, Vancouver. Moppett graduated with an MFA from Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec in 1995. He is represented by Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver.

Andrea Pinheiro is an artist and curator. She works in print, mixed media, and installation. She has exhibited across Canada and internationally, most recently with Or Gallery in Berlin. She began her studies at White Mountain Academy of the Arts in Elliot Lake, Ontario, received her MFA from the University of Alberta and has completed a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts. For the past three years she has worked as the Program Manager for Malaspina Printmakers and will be beginning a position this summer as an Assistant Professor at Algoma University in Ontario.

This exhibition is curated by Reid Shier and organized by Presentation House Gallery.

ABOUT

The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Museum of Anthropology, and Presentation House Gallery–with the generous support of the Michael O’Brian Family Foundation–opened the doors to Satellite Gallery on Saturday, October 23rd. This new, shared project space is devoted to exploring the boundaries of artistic and institutional practices.

“In addition to the opportunities provided by established art institutions in Vancouver,” said Michael O’Brian of the Michael O’Brian Family Foundation, “there is a need and desire for practitioners and students to have exhibition spaces to try out new projects and engage in meaningful dialogue with the public. Satellite Gallery is an ideal space for experimentation, learning and engagement in the arts.”
